White Clouds are a bit of a puzzle. They come from a mountainous area of China (apparantly, though now extinct in the wild) which has average temeratures of 20+C. They normaly breed in water temperatures of between 18 and 23C, but are perfectly happy in water as cold as 5C or water as warm as 25C (about mid range for a number of tropicals)! You can go to 2 or 3 aquatic shops in the same area and one will sell them as tropical, 1 as cold water and 1 as temperate (in between).
Mine seem happier in water between 20 and 22C which is what the heater is maintaining. Some people have found theirs to be happier at colder temperatures. In the end I would say it comes down to what they are used to. If the shop kept them in cold water, they prefer it cooler, if tropical, they prefer warmth (Mine were sold as Tropicals).
They always amaze me at how greedy they are and are dubbed the Pirhanas as a group.

In response to:Who looks after the fish?

PS. http://www.kokosgoldfish.invisionzone.com/forum/index.php?act=idx is a GREAT fish forum with lots of info on goldfish and tropicals!

In response to:Who looks after the fish?

I have white clouds in a 35 litre tank - again, a tank that was sold to me as suitable for FIVE goldfish! The assumption you made was that "Everything comes from something" and therefore the matter which was at the big bang must have come from somewhere. There is nothing in the human experience to show that something comes from another thing. We found everything here and all we are doing is just rearranging matter in different styles and giving them different names. We say sugar comes from sugarcane, and that paper comes trees, but the reality is that sugar ,sugarcane, paper, trees, humans and all other matter are made up of the same protons, electrons and neutrons and therefore nothing new is being made, just rearrangement of these elementary particles.Paper is not something "NEW",the particles making it existed in the tree before we rearranging it.We have therefore never seen something new come from something that already existed. This is a common misconception. For you to get something new you need nothing first, and for you to get nothing you need something first. Nothingness and "somethingness" go together like light and darkness. Therefore nothingness was a prerequisite for getting the first matter before the big bang, and if there is going to be nothing in the future it is because there is something now. Philosophers from the east understood this concept for thousands of years. You cant have a front without the back, although they are opposite, they go together. You need the front in order to have the back, and you need the back in order to have the front. And that's how the universe is,opposites go together.

In response to:I Has a Ticket!

I am an artist based in Nottingham UK, I am also a big fan of Jarre. While I use the minimum flexion behind the verticle for Gypsy, while keeping an allowing contact with a long rein. I have ridden horses, one 4 years old, that have been so extensivly trained with this method, that trying to get their heads in the correct position to allow them to step under correctly and lift the shoulders, takes most of the riding session.
For me, with Gypsy being so affected by what other horses are doing and the surrounding athmosphere, just walking him on a circle line during a busy lesson, won't work, hence my use of a small amount of flexion, to concentrate his mind back on me.
But, no. Classical dressage says that a horse should stretch in front of the vertical and the head should always be approaching the vertical - when you look at virtually any dressage competition now ....look carefully 98% are behind the vertical and the 3rd vertebrae is the highest point - when it should the the POLL at the highest (according the FEI rules)
The Bassett hound relates to the amount of loose skin that is acceptable and the length of the ears. The changes there will result a dog that resembles Fred Bassett.
The Bulldog is to become longer legged, enabling it to breed and leaner, also the head is to be made smaller, the excessive rolls of skin on the face decreased in quantitiy, and the nose lowered and lengthened.

In response to:British Bulldog to become extinct!

I'd like to see Scrufts more recognised. I use an exercise on Gypsy, where I ASK, not force, him to flex slightly behind the verticle on a long rein with an allowing contact, while riding him on a circle line when he tenses up, early on in a lesson because other people are tearing round and round in canter. I try to avoid too much canter work with Gypsy as it excites him, causing him to lose that lovely, soft, rounded outline that I have spent time asking him to work into.
When he gets excited, he will charge round with out care for his rider or others in or around the arena. I have never had that happen with me, but I have seen it happen with others. If I am supposed to allow him to charge round the arena in this state, rather than bringing him back to walk the moment I fell him tense up and work him in a way that relaxes him, is that really so wrong as opposed to the alternative? The welfare of the horse I ride is always first and foremost.

In response to:Dressage again

I happen to find it disgusting that people passionately back Anky because they presume that, since she is the No. 1 ranked rider in the world, she cannot possibly be wrong.
Guess what. That's not how the world works. Grow up and see things with your own eyes and heart.
Just because it's what is winning right now does not make it right or just.
